Teaching at Breakthrough
Breakthrough teachers are accomplished high school and college students from the Hampton Roads area and around the country.
Applications to teach at our Breakthrough site in Norfolk are submitted through our national affiliation with Breakthrough Collaborative.
Why teach at Breakthrough?
The People: Talented and devoted to their students, Breakthrough faculty form close and lasting connections with their students and with each other.
The School: All Breakthrough teachers enjoy use of Norfolk Academy's facilities and resources. Each teacher has his or her own classroom for the duration of the Summer Session, as well as access to a range of educational tools and media. Out-of-town teachers stay in dormitory housing next-door to Norfolk Academy at Virginia Wesleyan University.
The Support: Breakthrough teachers begin the Summer Session with a seven-day training period. Throughout the summer, each Breakthrough teacher works with a veteran school-year teacher who provides resources, support, and feedback. Professional development sessions are offered weekly to promote continued growth.
The Location: Norfolk Academy is located within a fifteen-minute drive from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and Downtown Norfolk, a forty-minute drive from Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, and an hour-and-a-half drive from North Carolina's Outer Banks.
The summer has made me more confident in my abilities and
allowed me to prove to myself that I am capable of running a classroom and having a positive impact on students.
