Enrichment at the Academy offers extra-curricular opportunities for students after school and on the weekends. These programs are open to the public.

Bulldog Athletic Programs are run by Norfolk Academy varsity coaches, and varsity players and other coaches are on hand to help the students learn basic skills.

  • Excellent Espanol

    Come, enjoy learning about the Spanish world, above and beyond the classroom. We will experience lots of fun cultural activities, food, oral practice, and more! You and your child will be amazed by the world they will discover.

  • Sewing/Fashion Design: Level 1

    Explore the world of fashion design and sewing with a 6 week class that will teach young students how to use a sewing machine to create Fashion. Students will learn about different fabrics, how to use them and how to construct their projects. Sewing machines will be provided.

  • Breakaway Boxes

    Learn how to make a "Breakaway Box" that unfolds to hold a complete miniature room - perfect as a decoration in your home or as a gift. 

    Instructor: Patty Klewans. Science Teacher, Grades 1-3

    Time: 8:00am-5:00pm

    Location: Room 714 (Lower School, Grades 1-3 Science Room)

    Cost: $100.00 (includes fabric, felt & ribbon)

    Special Notes: Partners are necessary and required for children younger than 12 who are first time "box-makers." (A person accompanying a student to assist the child in making a "breakaway box" is included in the student's fee. An adult, teen, grandparent or experienced box maker all make an excellent partner.) If your child is unable to have someone accompany him/her, please email Patty Klewans at least one week in advance. Adults may also enroll in the class alone. 
    *Please remember to bring your lunch, a drink or two, and a snack.*
  • Handmade Holiday Gifts

    Fun and practical and just in time for the holiday season, this popular and captivating enrichment program will give participants the opportunity to apply their own personal touch to make gifts for the special people in their lives. We’ll make some functional, some fanciful, and some flashy items. You’ll need to get your creative juices flowing as you whittle away at your holiday gift list, making gifts for folks of all ages. At the end of the day you can expect to have up to 8 gifts wrapped and ready for giving. Just bring along your gift list and get ready to be productive. Everything else you need will be provided for you (including lunch). What a fantastic way to show your love to your family and friends!

  • YPTP presents "Aesop's Fabulous Fable Factory"

    Aesop, a famous Greek Storyteller, will come alive in our play. You will enter a factory that has very special powers, but has been silent for many years.  Some curious kids happen upon the factory and bring it to life. This play is complete with furry friends; such as the Tortoise and the Hare, you know them….Slow and Steady wins the race! And who can forget, The Boy Who Cried Wolf!  Disclaimer: You might just learn something!  The cast will help tell the stories, make machine parts, set pieces and create Their own costumes.  Becky Peterson will be directing and hopes you can join she and her team to present….Aesop’s: Fabulous Fable Factory!

  • Bulldog Baseball

    Get ready to hit, run and field! Varsity Baseball coach, Tim LaVigne, will hold an 4-week baseball clinic for boys in grades 1-6.  Sessions will focus on hitting, defense, pitching, and base running. Current varsity baseball players will be on hand to assist Coach LaVigne with instruction.

    Grades: 1-6, Boys

    Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 26 - October 19

    Time: 3:20pm - 4:45pm

    Location:  Watson Field

    Cost: $150 (includes a Bulldog Baseball t-shirt)

    What to bring: Sneakers or cleats, hat, and a water bottle. If available, players should also bring a glove and bat. Extra equipment is available for those children who do not have their own.

  • Karate

    Sensei Andre Serrette returns to offer another session of traditional Japanese karate classes. Students will learn discipline, respect, and gain self-confidence through the invaluable teachings, principles, and traditions of karate. Competition is not compulsory, but is available to those students who are interested.  Students may attend an optonal Saturday class from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Genbu Kai Karate, 8132 Shore Dr., Norfolk ( at no additional charge!

    What to wear: For the first two weeks, students will wear sweatpants and a t-shirt. After that, students wear their uniform or "Gi". 
  • Soccer Shots

    Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed curriculum based soccer program that focuses on individual skill development, fitness and sportsmanship, providing an opportunity for children to be challenged through fun games and team interaction. Focus is on the individual development of the participant, within the team sport, and competition will be introduced in a developmentally appropriate manner.

    Grades: 1-3

     Thursdays; September 14 - November 16
    (No class Thursday, September 21 due to Rosh Hashanah)

    Location: Field behind the Lower School (pick-up in the LS Lobby)

  • Yoga - Downward Facing Bulldogs

    This enrichment class will help your Bulldog build strength, flexibility, focus and friendships through the practice of yoga.  Veteran children's yoga teacher, Rita Woods,  will share her years of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm in this weekly class designed specifically for the young yogis. Instruction is based on the most current and scientific findings in both kinesiology and mindfulness, paired with a child-focused teaching style.   • Cardboard Construction Challenges

    Pure imagination! We will brainstorm ideas of what to create together after studying the sizes and shapes of various cardboard boxes, sharing suggestions and expanding on each others’ ideas.  Students will cut, color, paint, glue, reconfigure, and decorate the boxes into whatever their imaginations conjure, big, little or in-between.  Come prepared to create!

  • Robotics

    Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. Guided by adult Coaches and members of the Upper School Robotics team, the Lower School Robotics Enrichment will be modeled on the FIRST LEGO League program. They will research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and will be challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology.

  • Star Wars Galactic Adventure in Science, Engineering, and Math

    This brand new and engaging program will build on children’s natural curiosity by teaching concepts in engineering, science, and math through Star Wars themed activities. Research has shown that kids who have early experiences in these fields will develop a stronger understanding of these concepts when they get older. This enrichment program will stimulate students’ interest in these fields of the future while embracing their love of the popular Star Wars movies. During these six sessions, your child will experience hands-on explorations which will encourage innovative, critical, and creative thinking. The Force will be with everyone who chooses to participate in this program!

  • Bulldog Swim Team

    The six-week program is designed to prepare competitive swimmers. Participants must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke in order to get the most out of this experience. Emphasis will be placed on proper stroke mechanics for each of the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Stroke drills, proper race strategies, and basic training techniques will be introduced according to the swimmer’s age and abilities.  We will hold a "mock" swim meet on Thursday, October 19, to which all Bulldog Swim Team members will be invited (even if that is not their usual swimming day).
