Enrichment at the Academy offers extra-curricular opportunities for students after school and on the weekends. These programs are open to the public.

Bulldog Athletic Programs are run by Norfolk Academy varsity coaches, and varsity players and other coaches are on hand to help the students learn basic skills.

  • Sewing: Grades 3-4

    Explore the world of fashion design and sewing with an 8 week class that will teach young students how to use a sewing machine to create Fashion. Students will learn about different fabrics, how to use them and how to construct their projects. Sewing machines will be provided.

  • Bulldog Swim Team

    The six-week program is designed to prepare competitive swimmers. Participants must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke in order to get the most out of this experience. Emphasis will be placed on proper stroke mechanics for each of the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Stroke drills, proper race strategies, and basic training techniques will be introduced according to the swimmer’s age and abilities.  We will hold a "mock" swim meet on Thursday, May 17 , to which all Bulldog Swim Team members will be invited (even if that is not their usual swimming day).

    Special Instructions: Coaches will meet students Lower School students in the lobby at the bus bell and walk them to the pool. Parents should pick up students in the pool lobby. Lower School Students not picked up by 4:45 p.m. will be taken to Aftercare.
  • Basketball Skills for Girls

    Interested in playing Basketball? Or maybe you would like to improve? Basketball Skill for Girls is designed to give young players an opportunity to learn the fundamentals and play the game of basketball. Using an assortment of drills and games, students will receive instruction in fundamentals, including passing,shooting, dribbling and team concepts. Basketball rims will be set at an the age appropriate height. Students should come dressed to play wearing athletic shorts, t-shirts and shoes.

  • Bulldog Field Hockey

    Bulldog Field Hockey- outside on our state of the art turf field.  Girls will learn skills and apply them in game situations.  Sessions led by Varsity players and current NA coaches. *Note: 20 participants minimum.

  • Bulldog Volleyball

    Learn the basics of volleyball or increase your knowledge of the sport in this fun, interactive environment. We will work on passing, serving and start to understand the team dynamics of the game. Come dressed to play wearing athletic shorts, t-shirts and shoes. Knee pads are also recommended, but not required.

  • Karate Dojo

    WELCOME TO GENBU KAI OF VIRGINIA. To share the invaluable teachings, principles, and traditions of the art of Karate-Do.Through our teachings we instill good work ethic, positive attitude, a resilient mind and spirit, along with building a strong physical body. Our main goal is to develop good character and to become the best version of ourselves. Any student who is enrolled at Norfolk Academy karate class can also attend classes at the main dojo at no additional cost. Interested parents /students please see Sensei.

  • Soccer Shots

    Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed curriculum based soccer program that focuses on individual skill development, fitness and sportsmanship, providing an opportunity for children to be challenged through fun games and team interaction. Focus is on the individual development of the participant, within the team sport, and competition will be introduced in a developmentally appropriate manner.

    Grades: 1-3

    Dates:
     Thursdays; March 15 - May 10

    Time: 3:20-4:30pm

    Location: Field behind the Lower School (pick-up in the LS Lobby)

    Cost: $95.00

    What to wear: Athletic apparel and either sneakers or cleats. Shin-guards are optional.
  • Volleyball: Grades 1-3

    Spikes & Tykes is designed to give young players an opportunity to learn and play the game of volleyball. We will have soft touch volleyballs, an age appropriate net height, and special equipment to teach the fundamentals of spiking. Using an assortment of drills and games, students will receive instruction in volleyball fundamentals, including passing, setting, hitting, and team concepts. Come dressed to play wearing athletic shorts, t-shirts and shoes. Knee pads are also recommended, but not required.

  • Cardboard Construction

    Pure imagination! We will brainstorm ideas of what to create together after studying the sizes and shapes of various cardboard boxes, sharing suggestions and expanding on each others’ ideas.  Students will cut, color, paint, glue, reconfigure, and decorate the boxes into whatever their imaginations conjure, big, little or in-between.  Come prepared to create!

  • 3D Habitat Design

    Students will be taught the basics of 3D design, and use the online website TinkerCad to design objects that will be used in Mr. Carrol's animal habitats.  Dr. Galler will also teach students about 3D printing using the EDI program's 3D printer, the Ultimaker 3.  Would the gekko like a new ladder?  Would the mummichog like a maze? It is up to you to design new features for the animals' habitats.

  • Cryptography: Writing & breaking secret codes

    Want to write a note to your best friend that nobody else but the two of you can read?  If so, then you need to learn about cryptography, which is the art of writing and breaking secret codes.  Not only will this enrichment teach you several different secret code styles, but you will also learn about codes used throughout history, as well as unsolved mysteries and lost treasure maps that may be solved if you can break the codes.  We will also have our own treasure hunts around lower school.
