Brammy Rajakumar ’19 Receives National Academic Recognition

Brammy Rajakumar ’19 has been selected as a National Merit Finalist.

Brammy, who has attended Norfolk Academy since first grade, is one of 15,000 Finalists nationwide, which represents less than 1% of graduating seniors. In the group of National Merit finalists, 7,500 students will qualify for scholarship awards given through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. There are three categories of awards: National Merit Scholarships ($2,500) offered on a state representational basis; corporate-sponsored scholarships; and college-sponsored scholarships. A finalist cannot receive more than one award, and every award must be used for full-time attendance at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

Brammy is also a 2019 Presidential Scholar Nominee, one of only 4,000 in the nation and 120 in Virginia. The nominees are selected in large measure based on SAT and ACT scores, and are typically nominated by each state’s Secretary of Education. Students cannot be nominated by their schools or apply individually.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is designed to recognize the top academic scholars among graduating seniors. While it is one of the nation’s top honors, the program does not offer scholarship awards; the approximately 120 finalists are notified in April, and they receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for “an award ceremony sponsored by the White House.”

“Brammy is an outstanding student and citizen, whose contributions in and outside the classroom are widely recognized by her teachers. She is active as a Global Affairs Fellow; as a violinist in our school orchestra and in the regional Bay Youth Orchestra; and as a varsity tennis player, to list just some of her extracurricular pursuits,” Headmaster Dennis Manning said. “Brammy is living testament to our belief in the importance of students’ combining a robust life of the mind with artistic and athletic engagement and accomplishment.  She is a truly well-rounded student, and in that way an exemplar of our school’s philosophy.” In addition to her school activities, Brammy also participates in Indian classical dance, specifically the Bharatanatyam genre, and she is co-captain of the NA dance team.

Congratulations, Brammy, and good luck!
