Lower School Students Take Command of Coding

Norfolk Academy Lower School students are participating in a global movement this week. Coinciding with Computer Science Education Week, the Hour of Code™ event began Monday, December 3, and ends Sunday, December 9…although it is doubtful these budding computer science aficionados will stop logging in to tackle their next coding activity when the week is over.
 
The goal of the event is to promote computer science for all ages. Hour-long tutorials are created in 45 languages and are crafted to be of interest to different age groups and levels.
 
Stephanie Cress, Lower School Computer and Technology teacher, guides the students through the weeklong lesson. “It requires a lot of problem solving,” said Mrs. Cress. “That’s one benefit to it. It introduces (the students) to computer science and gives them the opportunity to explore something different.”
 
After they complete one game—each containing multiple levels—Mrs. Cress congratulates the students and allows them to select their next game to conquer.  The students are eager to move on to the next challenge. Asked how second grader, Derionn G., felt as he completed level six of his eighth lesson he exclaimed, “It’s really fun!”
 
His classmate, Beau B., gave some advice for the first grade class experiencing their first year of Hour of Code™: “Sometimes you go across, or jump forward, or jump back. Just look at the board and try to figure out which way is up and which way is down.”



The 'Hour of Code™' is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week [csedweek.org] and Code.org [code.org] to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.
