Many fall sports teams have hit major accomplishments this season. The boys and girls cross country teams were the latest to do so, by making history during the TCIS Championships this past weekend.
“Our first team goal for this year was to win both the boys and girls titles in the TCIS,” said head coach Ken Lampert. “We had not done that in over 25 years.
"We did yesterday, as we won solidly, with the boys ahead of Cape Henry Collegiate School and Peninsula Catholic High School, while the girls earned the top spot, beating out a solid Nansemond-Suffolk Academy team."
To top matters off, the girls junior varsity squad also won their race, and the boys team took home second place.
The varsity boys had four individuals make All-TCIS, with Harrison Summers ’21 placing 3rd, Alex Nevarez ’19 going 4th, Ben Summers ’20 in 5th, and Franklin Reid ’21 rounding out the top 10 in 7th place. Connor Rhoades ’23, Grayson Glenn ’19, and Jonathan Levin ’21 also delivered solid performances, going 18th, 28th, and 33rd, respectively. It was enough to earn the group 29 points, putting them in first.
The varsity girls had five individuals receive All-TCIS honors, and five ladies placed in the top 10. Elle Lambert ’19 coming in 2nd, Emma Somers ’19 placing 3rd, Maddie Brooks ’21 earning 5th place, Julia Duarte ’20 in 7th, and Mariana Duarte ’22 topping off the group with 9th place. Fin Berry ’21 and Peyton Harrell ’21 came in 18th and 21st place, mere seconds off All-TCIS accolades but giving the girls team another boost to win by 54 points.
“It was really exciting!” said new assistant coach and Middle School Latin teacher Margaret Marshall, who gave the student-athletes encouragement leading up to the race. “Nerves were present because you could tell they wanted to win so badly. I kept asking, ‘Are we ready to win this thing?!’ to get them ready for the race.”
“It was a fun day, a rewarding day,” said Coach Lampert. “Our group represented NA the way you want them to, with class. We go into the VISAA state meet as underdogs, but we will do our best to make sure they know we were there.”
Congratulations to all the cross country runners!
