Middle School Students Offered Roles in Regional Orchestra
Congratulations to Areen Syed ’24 and Riley McElligott ’23, who recently auditioned for – and accepted – positions in the Junior District Orchestra, a regional group which consists of one 7th and one 8th grade orchestra. The ensemble is comprised of students from Norfolk and Virginia Beach who must audition to be accepted.
Securing a spot with the Junior District Orchestra is no easy feat. This year, about 50 cellists (roughly 25 per grade level), and around 100 violinists (or 50 per grade level) auditioned. With only a select number of students chosen for the five sections – Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, and Bass – within each orchestra, the competition was tough.
Areen’s instrument of choice is the cello, which she has been playing since the 2nd grade. She placed 4th in the district for her section and grade during her audition.
Riley plays the violin, and she has been playing for about 11 years. The years of practice have paid off, as she placed 5th in the district for her section and grade.
The students will perform in a two-day event in January, where they will rehearse for a day and a half before giving a concert at the end of the second day. The concert is free and open to the public on Saturday, January 12.
Bravo, ladies! We look forward to watching you perform in January!
