How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
This is my fourth year at Norfolk Academy.

Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
My natural curiosity insured that I always enjoyed school. I was lucky enough to have had some great teachers. And watching others make breakthroughs and connections for themselves in the Arts is fun.

What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
I have never met a more professional faculty. In fact, they are a pretty intimidating bunch intellectually. Their habits of mind are to be imitated. Their kindness is humbling. It is a pleasure to laugh with them everyday. And when things get serious, they make the BEST trivia team.

Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...they have no bells between classes, seniors give speeches, we all eat lunch together, and no one else has Elbert Watson on their faculty.

What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
I am often found casting a shadow in my garden. I learn more from my garden than anywhere else. It is a PhD waiting in my own backyard. And it is a lot cheaper. You would be amazed at what a shovel and a few seeds can teach you.

Last book read:
I recently re-read 1984 by George Orwell, and, for the first time, I'm reading The Sixth Extinction and White Trash: The 400 Year Untold Story of Class in America by Nancy Isenberg.

Favorite food?
Tacos.

A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
That would be a boring movie. My life has been pretty good, and we all know you can't make a decent story without some serious conflict. It would take a brilliant actor to make my story into a good movie. So I would have to choose Judi Dench because even dressed in men's clothing she actually could make my story compelling.

Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
When I was about nine years old I once delivered my entire paper route while sleep walking - without any papers and at about nine o'clock at night.

“When I grow up, I want to be…”
...an architect the likes of Frank Gehry.
