Mr. Manning's Birthday Surprise from Mrs. Warn’s Third Graders

What do you do when you’ve prepared the best present ever for the Headmaster...and his birthday falls on a weekend...and he has to go to an official Headmaster meeting afterward?

Well, if you are Mrs. Warn’s 3GB girls, you wait very patiently and give him the best belated birthday present ever...a list of carefully pondered, well-written birthday questions (along with this year’s Lower School birthday button to pin on his lapel).

The class filed into his office on Wednesday afternoon, four days after his October 13 birthday, to pose the queries, many of which had surprising answers. (Does he have a birthday bow tie? No, he does not!)

Fortunately, Mrs. Manning was in the office that day, so she could help him with some of the tough questions! And, it turns out, her cooking featured in many of Mr. Manning’s replies. Here are just a few:

Q: What was your favorite birthday present as a child?

A bicycle! A blue Schwinn Stingray! I wanted that bike so desperately...and my parents got it for me.

Q: What is your favorite birthday dinner?

My wife makes a great dish! Red beans and rice from New Orleans. That’s my favorite...she makes it a few times a year, not just on my birthday.

Q: What is your favorite cake and ice cream flavor?

Mrs. Manning makes a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting...and vanilla ice cream!

Q: Did you like sharing your birthday with your brother? (Mr. Manning is a twin, and it turns out that 3GB has several girls who are twins, so his response was eagerly anticipated.)

I did! We moved several times when I was a child, and I always had a friend wherever we went.

Q: What is the most exciting thing you have ever done on your birthday?

I went to a Dallas Cowboys football game...with my brother too.

What do you typically do on your birthday?

I like coming to school on my birthday!

We certainly can tell that! Happy birthday, Mr. Manning!
