Norfolk Academy faculty and staff are recommending a couple of their favorite books for the NA community. Each week, we will feature one member's book recommendations.
Mr. Dennis Manning, Headmaster
Favorite adult book recommendation — Tyrant: Shakespeare on Politics by Stephen Greenblatt Students sometimes ask, "Why read Shakespeare?" Greenblatt's study of different leadership modes helps us understand that leaders and those they lead are in a remarkably complex, dynamic relationship. We are reminded why Shakespeare's works are an enduring and topical commentary on the human social and political condition, as relevant today (and for all time) as in Shakespeare's own turbulent Elizabethan times.
Favorite children's book recommendation — Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne A favorite book from my childhood was A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, which comes to mind in this Year of Friendship, with Pooh and Piglet modeling loyalty. Gloomy Eeyore helps us remember how important it is to appreciate differences. Peripatetic Tigger reminds us how important it is to have a sense of adventure. Milne’s “Englishness” (especially for those of us who number ourselves Anglophiles) is a real bonus!
