How long have you been at Norfolk Academy?
I am currently finishing my 22nd year at Norfolk Academy.

Tell us why you wanted to become an educator:
At the Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama, I had the greatest experience as a student, and I've wanted to be a part of a great school ever since then.

What most excites you about working at Norfolk Academy?
The students

Norfolk Academy is unique because…
...we mix tradition with innovation in powerful ways -- I don't know of any other schools that do it as well.

Last book read:
American Philosophy: A Love Story by John Kaag

What do you like to do in your own time/when you’re not working?
Read, travel, practice Muay Thai, explore Hampton Roads, hold grammar debates with my lovely wife (also an English teacher), and have philosophical conversations with my cats

Favorite food?
Falafel

A movie is being made about your life. Who would they cast to play you?
I could only hope it would be (seventh grade teacher) Nick Merklin.

Fun fact your students might not know about you/might find surprising:
Superhero movies make me cry.

“When I grow up, I want to be…”
...at least half as smart and creative as (fellow Literacy Fellows Co-Director) Elizabeth Johnson.
