Second graders gathered in Cooper Library this week to celebrate El Día De Los Niños/Los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Books) with Mrs. Madelyn Kresinske, Lower School librarian, and Señora Ashley Hartson, Lower School Spanish teacher.
The group participated in numerous activities, including a bilingual reading of Pura Belpre award-winnging book by Pat Mora, titled Book Fiesta!: Celebrate Children's Day/Book Day, Celebremos El día de los niños/El día de los libros. They were also given an "El Día" bookmark where that they could color and write down the title of their El libro favorito (favorite book). Students traveled to different stations to trade bookmarks and book recommendations with their peers who are in a different second grade class. Different posters were positioned around the library with questions like, "Where is your favorite reading spot?" and "Which book brings you 'book joy'?" Students were encouraged to record their answers on Post-It notes and add them to the posters.
"Second graders are currently working on their RINGO (Reading BINGO) Boards in their homerooms and have been voraciously reading all different genres of books," said Mrs. Kresinske. "This celebration was aimed at helping them find new books and to act as a reminder that reading, having the ability to read, and having access to reading materials is a gift and is something to be treasured."
