Boys' and Girls' Basketball Teams are TCIS Tournament Champions

Norfolk Academy Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams had not reached the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) championship finals since the late 1990s. That long wait made the twin victories all the more sweet: on Saturday, both teams won TCIS Championships, playing in intensely competitive games that had fans whipped into a frenzy of cheering.

Girls’ Basketball defeated the Steward School, which joined the TCIS this year, by a score of 50-46. Chelsea Worthy '19 was named to the the 1st Team All-Conference, and Michela Jones '21 earned 2nd Team honors. The five starters on the girls' team were Worthy, Jones, Taylor Harvey '18, Mackenzi Mills '18, and Kate Furr '19.

Head Coach Neil Duffy, who teaches physics in the Upper School, was named Coach of the Year. Assistant coaches are Megan Hallberg, Upper School math teacher, and Mike Sarino.

Boys’ Basketball defeated Walsingham Academy 44-43 in a hard-fought game; during much of the second half, Walsingham was ahead by 2-3 points, but the Bulldogs evened the score to 40-40 late in the fourth quarter and emerged victorious. Mark Williams '20 earned 1st Team All-Conference and was named the MVP of the tournament. Finn Cochrane '18 earned 2nd Team All-Conference and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The five starters on the boys' team were Williams, Cochrane, Neil Malik '18, David Byler '19, and Jabril Lewis '19; four of the five have been at Norfolk Academy since the first grade.

The head coach for the boys' team is Eric Acra, Upper School Assistant Director and history teacher. Assistant coaches are Ari Zito, Director of Breakthrough at Norfolk Academy and Upper School English teacher and Chris Williams.

Both games were hosted by Norfolk Christian Schools.
