  • What is the Center for Civic and Global Leadership?

    The Center for Civic and Global Leadership is an innovative and nationally acclaimed fellowship program that provides selected ninth grade students at Norfolk Academy an outstanding opportunity to pursue a four-year, multidisciplinary and experiential course of study grounded in developing actionable solutions to real-world issues. Fellows engage in deep intellectual investigation in a chosen field and participate in leadership programs to build critical skills necessary to effect real change in our world. The Center reinforces and strengthens Norfolk Academy's commitment to producing principled, civic-minded leaders for tomorrow.  There are five fellowship programs:  Chesapeake Bay Fellows, Engineering, Design, and Innovation Fellows, Global Health Fellows, International Relations Fellows, and Literacy Fellows. 
  • Is Norfolk Academy an accredited school?

    Yes, Norfolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), The Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
  • When should I apply?

    Applications are available online beginning in October. The application deadline is at the end of January of the school year before you are seeking enrollment. Applications received after the deadline are considered on a rolling basis and applicants may be placed in a wait pool. If admission is not offered, applicants interested in being considered for the next school year must submit a new application.
  • What is included in tuition?

    In all grades, tuition includes lunch, publications, and all field trips. School supplies are included in tuition for Lower School students; Middle and Upper School students are responsible for purchasing required books and other school supplies.
  • What is Norfolk Academy looking for in an applicant?

    Norfolk Academy seeks boys and girls who show promise of intellectual curiosity and who come from varied economic, religious, ethnic and racial backgrounds. We are interested in admitting students who will appreciate and take full advantage of the many opportunities and resources we offer and who will be motivated to become not just the best students they can be, but also the best people they can be.
  • Is financial aid available?

    Yes. Norfolk Academy awards approximately $3 million annually in need-based financial aid. For more information, click here.
  • When will I know the results of my child's admissions testing?

    In grades 1-5, the test results can be discussed with the Director of Admissions after decision letters have been received. In grade 6-12, parents have access to the SSAT score report. We are happy to interpret SSAT results after decision letters have been received.
  • What are the school hours?

    Classes begin at 8:15 AM and end at 3:15 PM for all grades. Early care for grades 1-6 is offered beginning at 7:15 AM and Aftercare is available until 6:00 PM. 
  • Are there after school programs for Lower School children?

    Yes, in addition to Aftercare, which is available until 6:00 p.m., we offer an array of Enrichment Programs.  Click here to see what is currently being offered through Enrichment at the Academy.
  • Can students bring their own lunches?

    Lunch is provided to all students by Meriwether Godsey, and our signature seated lunches are served family style. Lunch is included in tuition for all students.  
  • What if my child has food allergies?

    Many of our students live with food allergies. Our refectory staff, faculty, and nurses are extraordinarily knowledgeable, experienced, and proactive in working with families who have allergen concerns. We are happy to discuss this with you at anytime, and are confident that your child will experience a safe and worry-free day at lunch and in the classroom every day!
  • Does Norfolk Academy have a dress code?

    Norfolk Academy believes appearance influences performance, self-image, and behavior. Students are expected to be neat, well-groomed, clean, and dressed within the guidelines defined here. Responsibility for appearance rests with the parents and the students themselves. 
  • Do you have bus service?

    Norfolk Academy proudly offers 15 bus routes throughout the region serving Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. We also offer daily late bus transportation for students in grades 7-12 who participate in activities after school.
  • Are Guidance and Counseling resources available?

    Yes.  Norfolk Academy has four Guidance Counselors.  Graham Hudgins supports upper school students; Jennifer Gildea supports middle school students; Susan Duquette supports students in Grades 4 - 6; and Sandy Harrison supports students in grades 1 - 3.
    Additionally peer counselors, selected by faculty and their fellow students, provide emotional support and academic tutoring to students in grades 7 - 12.
