Smith

Welcome Duane Smith! Mr. Smith, who helped in our band program last year, is our School of Arts Director and the Lower School Band Director. A dynamic trumpeter, composer, and music innovator, he began playing at age 12 and honed his craft in New York's jazz scene, studying at LaGuardia High School and performing with legends like Roy Hargrove. While attending Hampton University, he co-founded Peach Fuzz Entertainment and The Fuzz Band, touring globally on USO missions and performing at prestigious events including President Obama’s inaugural ball and major jazz festivals.

Why did you want to become a teacher?
There’s nothing more powerful than seeing the light in students' eyes when they finally grasp something they once thought was impossible—when it finally clicks. That moment of breakthrough, of confidence and pride, is what inspires me. That’s why I wanted to become a teacher.

What excites you about Norfolk Academy?
The People. The Community. The Support.

What's one fun fact about you students might find interesting?
I'm from Brooklyn and even though it can be hard, I love the Giants and the Knicks.
