Accomplished children's author Sylvia Liu visited Lower School on February 13 and 15, teaching about writing as well as tai chi, manatees, and other fun topics in her books.
Liu's path to becoming an author is impressive: She grew up in Venezuela, studied at Yale University and Harvard Law School, and worked as an environmental attorney to protect the oceans at the U.S. Department of Justice and a non-profit before jumping into writing.
Liu writes novels and picture books. Her works include Hana Hsu and the Ghost Crab Nation; Manatee's Best Friend; A Morning with Grandpa; a poem in Thanku: Poems of Gratitude; and a sci-fi short story in Don't Touch That!: A Sci-Fi and Fantasy Parenting Anthology. She has also had art and infographics appear in the Huffington Post, Oceana, and World Wildlife Fund.
She also co-founded Kidlit411, a resource website for children's writers and illustrators.
Liu has another good connection to NA. She is the mom of two young NA alums, Sammi Jacobs '20 and Sarah Jacobs '22.
Students loved trying all her creative exercises, including tai chi!
