Norfolk Academy was delighted to partner with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities at the annual Humanitarian Awards event in recognizing individuals who have made an indelible impact in uplifting the region and the Commonwealth, several with direct ties to Norfolk Academy. 

Jane P. Batten was recognized with the Distinguished Virginian Award, given only on rare occasions, for her transformative philanthropy and civic leadership to advance education, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. She is the benefactor of our Batten Leadership Program, which teaches students to lead through a unique combination of in-depth research, experiential learning, and service, and is a parent of alumni. 

Conrad M. Hall, retired CEO of Dominion Enterprises, Inc., received a humanitarian award for his service to numerous educational institutions, including the Boards of Visitors of Norfolk State, EVMS, and ODU. He served the school as a longtime trustee and a leader in philanthropy to strengthen the school's programs. 

Dr. Bruce Waldholtz, who served as a gastroenterologist and rector of EVMS, received a humanitarian award for his leadership in cancer education and as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society at the state and national levels. He is a parent of alumni.

The event was held March 26 at Virginia Wesleyan University. Also honored were Clyde T. Clark, Jr., vice president at Blue Ridge Bank, who has served on the boards of many civic and nonprofit boards, including EVMS, the YMCA; and Janet Days, Suffolk's Director of Economic Development, who was the first African American to serve as the Commanding Officer of Naval Station Norfolk.
