Performed by first graders, the Three Piggy Opera begins Norfolk Academy's approach to using drama as an educational tool that incorporates plenty of fun, all while helping students acquire skills and confidence.
The show is also a great way to build camaraderie, both with classmates and the young students' Senior Buddies, who watch and love every minute.
Directed by Music Teacher Becky Peterson with help from the first grade teaching team and dance instructors, this year's Three Piggy Opera was on February 4 in Price Auditorium. A musical version of the classic tale of the Three Little Pigs, all first graders participate on stage. This allows them to feel comfortable in front of an audience and use speaking skills they've been developing during Boy and Girl of the Day presentations in the classroom.
This focus on public speaking and thriving in front of an audience continues with class plays in second grade and the Field Day Play for third graders. Older Lower School students can participate in the Young People's Theater Program, an after school enrichment activity that lets them act or learn behind the scenes.
Once students enter Middle School, they can participate in school plays in the fall and spring and the Winter Musical.
But getting back to the Three Piggy Opera, another component students love is the chance to perform before their Senior Buddies, friends in 12th grade who they met at the start of the school year. The show February 4 drew loud applause and was followed by the chance for some bonding time and well deserved congratulations.
