The law school grind has never looked more fun than it did on the Johnson Theater stage with the production of “Legally Blonde," Norfolk Academy 44th annual Winter Musical.
Featuring more than 80 students onstage, as backstage crew, and in the pit orchestra, the show had it all--witty jokes, full production numbers with ensemble singing and dancing, riveting solos, and two cute canine stars to add to the fun.
Abigail Littlejohn '25 starred as Elle Woods, the Malibu blonde who pursues her true love, Warner Huntington III, played by CJ Murray '25, to Harvard Law School. There she discovers her intellectual prowess, newfound confidence, and a new romance with the help of an array of characters played by other seniors: Austin Sorrell '25 (Emmett), Olivia Crocker '25 (Paulette), Anna Barton '25 (Vivian Kensington), Xander Dukas '25 (Kyle O'Boyle, a dashing delivery man), and Leo Tang '25, playing both the remorseless Professor Callahan and a strolling violinist. All told, 22 seniors participated in the production, including six who had never acted in a school musical before--carrying on a school tradition of seniors who try a new adventure in their graduation year.
Getting equal billing with the human performers, two pooches took star turns: Elle's pet chihuahua, “Bruiser," whom she considers her “family" and who travels stylishly tucked in her arms, was played by August Bothe. Rufus the Bulldog, played by Weezie Peccie, drew applause as Dukas led him through the audience with jaunty, rhythmic strides.
The show was directed by Caroline Bisi, who is Norfolk Academy's drama teacher. Anna Meadows, who teaches music in the Upper and Middle Schools, led the pit orchestra.
