Norfolk Academy Upper School Visual Art students worked feverishly as the first half of the school year came to a close, to create a holiday gift for the entire school community.
The students created a digital cookbook, titled The HeART of Cooking. The book is a compilation of a favorite recipes from students, illustrated with their own works of art: large drawings, paintings, collages, mixed-media, and even embroidery and ceramic sculpture. (Original works will be on display at school in early 2023.)
Betsy DiJulio, the students' art teacher, said she was impressed by their art, of course, but also their statements about why the recipes are special to them. To DiJulio, it is clear that these students are connected to family and culture through fond memories of delicious eats from elk stew to Brigadeiros and everything in between.
“I am so proud of these students and the ambitious projects they took on to share a bit of sweet, savory, and soulful sustenance in this Year of Kindness at Norfolk Academy," DiJulio said.
The book is 44 pages, with a recipe on almost every page. DiJulio hopes everyone will find something they can try in the kitchen.
“We hope you delight in the art that helps bring it to life even if you never prepare a single recipe...though we hope you do!," she said.
