Norfolk Academy's Year of Purpose is off and rolling!

Students arrived bright and early for the first day of classes, eager to meet old friends and new teachers. They also were excited to continue popular traditions, most noticeably first graders patting the Bulldog and seniors bringing in kiddie backpacks that are donated to partner organizations. 

As he greeted first graders, Head of School Travis Larrabee assured the young students that both nerves and excitement are completely natural on the first day. It's normal for students of all ages, and even parents and teachers, to feel a little on edge, even as they know all the wonderful memories and opportunities that await. 

"Welcome to this wonderful, big Bulldog community," Larrabee said. "We are so happy to have you with us, so happy to be on this journey with you all for the next 12 years. It's going to be great."

While these youngest students were patting the Bulldog and meeting their new teachers, older students were settling into classes. Each year at Norfolk Academy has a theme, and this is the Year of Purpose. Students will dive more deeply into what that word means and signifies in the days ahead, but today they received a brief overview from division directors.

"Last year we examined inquiry, which is the process of understanding why," Middle School Director said at that division's opening chapel. "At its core, purpose is merely action that is informed by that why. It's a compass. It's going to steer you."

One opening day tradition that shows purpose is that of seniors bringing in backpacks that are donated to charity. Seniors love showing off their little kid backpacks, and realize that they are doing so for a good cause. This year's backpacks will go to Dos Santos, a Norfolk Academy partner that helps families on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The first day excitement lasted all day long. A great way to kick off the year!
