Zoë Jones ’24 and Ann Gray Golpira ’24 were featured in The Virginian-Pilot for their sweetly sensational diorama of Norfolk’s historic Doumar’s restaurant, using that beloved “cuisine” of the spring holiday season—marshmallow peeps.
The newspaper challenge, an annual competition that is equal parts whimsy and artistry, required the construction of a diorama with a Hampton Roads theme. (You might be surprised to learn that more than 40 submissions were received!)
Zoë and Ann Gray spent hours upon hours creating a miniature version of Doumar’s, the iconic diner and ice cream spot in downtown Norfolk. They incorporated peeps as the customers and workers, created mini hamburgers and waffle cones, and used a mixture of recycled and new materials.
Their diorama was one of a handful chosen to be featured in Sunday’s Arts section, and it also includes a fabulous 5-minute video of the girls explaining their creation with close-ups of some of the finer details. Other dioramas featured the U.S.S. Wisconsin, First Landing State Park, and the NEON district.
