Spirit Week and Homecoming certainly are about fun and building community excitement. At Norfolk Academy, they're also about serving the greater community.
Throughout this Spirit Week, September 23-27, students in all three divisions are bringing in donations to support Operation Smile, a Virginia Beach-based nonprofit that performs needed facial surgeries and care for children around the world suffering from cleft lip and palate. The school has a longstanding partnership with Operation Smile.
On Monday, donations of crayons and coloring books poured in by the box full. Tuesday's donations were toothpaste and toothbrushes. Wednesday and Thursday were washcloths and shampoo. Friday will be soap and stuffed animals.
Norfolk Academy students created the first Operation Smile club 40 years ago, and the club is still going strong. It organizes Be Someone concerts in the spring that raise money for the nonprofit, and students lead other fundraisers throughout the year.
Of course, Spirit Week has its fun as well. Because of their donations, students were allowed to dress down throughout the week. Monday was Jersey Day; Tuesday was PJ Day; Wednesday and Thursday were Red, White, and Blue Day (separated by division because of school picture days); and Friday will be Orange and Blue Day.
Friday is also Homecoming, and there are several athletics events in the afternoon and night, as well as festivities for alumni. Everyone is welcome!
