Norfolk Academy enjoyed a stellar state championship weekend, as several winter sport student-athletes earned titles.
Swimming and diving, indoor track, and wrestling all crowned state champions February 14-15. Norfolk Academy thrived in all three.
Boys swimming and diving took second place as a team in its competition in Stafford. The 400 free relay team of Jude Carroll, Adam Fairchilds, Spencer Thompson, and Blaise Van Slyke, all seniors, set a school and meet record in taking gold in that event with a time of 3:03.68. The 200 free relay team of John Benton '27, Fletcher Creech '25, Thompson, and Van Slyke also earned a state title. In addition, Thompson and Van Slyke set school records in individual events.
Girls swimming and diving took sixth place in the state and Liza Cutchins '29 set a school record in the 100 breaststroke.
Girls indoor track finished second in its state meet in Richmond. Taylor Kulow '27 won gold in the high jump and Josie Saffold '25 won gold in the 300-meter dash. Adaline Scott '26 set a school record in the 55 dash. Nora Clingenpeel '25, Mia Jones '27, Saffold, and Emma Uncapher '26 combined for a school record in the 4-by-400 relay.
Boys indoor track finished ninth in the state. Chance Stuart '25 was a state champion in the shot put, setting a school and meet record of 59 feet.
Wrestling had eight top-10 finishers at its state meet in McLean. Heavyweight Kaleb Gibson '25, 126-pounder Matteo De Filippo '28, and 144-pounder Josue Perez-Rosario '25 all finished fourth, which earned them a spot in a national prep qualifier.
