Faculty and staff fully returned to campus on August 18, one week before the start of classes, eager to engage together and prepare for the excitement of the coming school year.

In accordance with tradition, Board of Trustees Chair Chris Perry addressed faculty and staff in Johnson Theater on the opening day of meetings to launch the 2026-27 academic year, the Year of Purpose. Perry, the founder and managing partner at Suburban Capital, a Virginia Beach-based hospitality holding company, is beginning his term as Board Chair. He thanked everyone for their commitment to students and for their work in upholding the Honor System, noting that the entire Board stands with him in supporting the school's dedicated employees: “Your success will always be paramount for us."

Head of School Travis Larrabee spoke about purpose, calling on faculty and staff to use their gifts well. That may mean by being a good friend or changing someone else's world. Prepare students to build their own purpose, he said. 

Opening Meetings also are a time to celebrate teachers and staff who have reached career milestones. A number of these Bulldogs have served at NA for in excess of 20 years. Specially recognized were Maintenance Expert Norm Highter, Dance Master Elbert Watson, Facilities & Equipment Manager Bob Needham, and Receptionist Maggie Zontini. Those four have a combined 177 years of service. 

During the rest of the week, teachers had time to lesson plan and meet within divisions and departments. On the second morning, they also took part in a workshop on diversity and anti-bullying, led by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. Over the course of almost four hours, faculty discussed a wide range of issues related to inclusivity. 

Another highlight of Opening Meetings is the Faculty-Senior Luncheon. The Class of 2027 excitedly joined teachers on August 21, to prepare for the year ahead and join in camaraderie. Larrabee noted that among this year's class are 52 12-year thrivers, one new student, and 17 student-athletes already committed to playing sports at the next level. Community service is another activity near and dear to seniors' hearts. 

Larrabee called on the group to be kind, to themselves and others. Be an example for younger students. "We rely on you. We need you to set that tone."

The year will go by quickly, Larrabee added. Take advantage of the moments and reach out and connect with those around you. “Approach this year with a sense of purpose and a sense of eagerness," he said.
