Norfolk Academy Mourns the Passing of Joseph Price Massey '69

Norfolk Academy mourns the passing of The Honorable Joseph Price Massey '69, a devoted alumnus and steadfast supporter of NA and the Hampton Roads community.

Judge Massey’s connection to NA spanned a lifetime. The son of former Headmaster James B. Massey Jr. and Helen Thomas Collings Massey, he quite literally grew up on our campus (both on Newport Avenue and Wesleyan Drive) before graduating in 1969. He remained deeply devoted to the school as the proud father of two Academy graduates and the loving grandfather of three, including two current Bulldogs.

He served as a law clerk and trial lawyer before Virginia's General Assembly chose him to take over at the Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in 1997. He served as a judge there for 20 years. Among his many community commitments, he served on Boards of Directors at Edmarc Hospice for Children; the Norfolk Forum; the Rotary Club of Norfolk; and the Industrial Development Authority for the City of Norfolk. Both he and his late wife Alice Ashley Craddock Massey also served as Sunday School teachers.

A man of deep integrity, Judge Massey will be remembered for his many professional accomplishments, but also for his generosity, intellect, humor, and unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and Norfolk Academy.
