Norfolk Academy Mourns the Loss of Charles N. Cooper '53

Norfolk Academy mourns the passing of Charles N. Cooper '53, a proud alumnus, parent, grandparent, and member of our Board of Trustees.

Mr. Cooper exhibited an early talent as an essayist at NA, serving as editor of the yearbook, and excelled on both the football and tennis teams. He distinguished himself next at UVA as an honor society and ROTC member, and later earned his law degree at Columbia University, joining the Phi Delta Phi honor society.

After serving in the Army on active duty and reserve from 1957-65, he built a 50-plus year career as an attorney. At the age of 64 he began a second career, taking over management of family real estate corporation Cooper Realty, where he was joined in leadership by his sons, Erik '83 and Jeff '87. His dedication to the company remained steadfast as he continued to work into his late 80s.

Charles and his wife Minette took immense pride in their role as parents and grandparents. In addition to Erik and Jeff, daughter Brooke '81 graduated from NA, as did his nephew John '80 and three grandchildren. Charles also was deeply involved in his community, dedicating time and energy to numerous organizations throughout Hampton Roads. He served as an NA Trustee from 1983-92; was a founding director of the Tidewater Legal Aid Society; and played in a key role establishing the Old Dominion University Institute for Jewish Studies & Interfaith Understanding. He and Minette were recognized for their generous contributions to educational, cultural, and charitable organizations.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 2, at Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk.
