There was jubilation and a bit of stunned amazement when the when the Men’s Lightweight Four won gold in the state regatta at Occoquan last year—marking the first time in the history of Norfolk Academy crew that the team had emerged as the state champion.
On Saturday, there was repeat jubilation but a bit less amazement, as the Men’s Lightweight Four won gold again with the same line-up of rowers, all of them seniors: Peyton McNider, B. Gray Randolph, Will Klena, and Destin Rodgers. This year, the foursome rowed under the direction of a different coxswain: Scarlett Baughman, a senior, was providing the motivation for this year’s victory, replacing Katie Debbas, who graduated last year.
The crew team had even more to celebrate this year: The Women’s Varsity Four won bronze with rowers Madison Kirkman ’19, Veronica Verdi '22, Leah Smith ’20, Emme Pike ’19. Elaina Tenfelde ’20 was the coxswain.
