Norfolk Academy celebrated a very happy 296th birthday on November 13!
Charter Day, the date when the school was founded in 1728, is a day for festivities around campus. Students are treated to orange and blue cupcakes at lunch. This year, the Upper School began a new tradition, as the CHKD Club sponsored the first-ever Charter Day Picnic and Fun Run.
Another highlight of the day is the honoring of the Charter Day Award. The Tunstall Student Council gives the award annually to a teacher of at least three years tenure who has earned the respect of colleagues and students through excellence in teaching and extracurricular activities, depth of knowledge in his or her field, and the ability to create a trusting environment for students.
Joe Bakkar '24, TSC President, and Srivarun Hathwar '24, Senior Class President, announced Spanish Teacher George Bunn as the winner of the award during Upper School Chapel. That announcement was met with a huge standing ovation.
An honors graduate of UVA who served in the United States Navy and operated his own import business before entering teaching, Señor Bunn teaches Upper School Spanish and coaches wrestling. He's also a faculty advisor for Prom, has guided Maymester trips to the United States-Mexico border, and leads NA's Spanish Exchange program.
As Joe said, “he has invested his heart into the students of Norfolk Academy."
