After a two-year national search, Norfolk Academy is pleased to announce that Mr. Jeffrey M. Boyd has been appointed Middle School Director. An independent school lifer and thriver, Mr. Boyd will join us from Durham Academy in North Carolina, where he has served in a variety of roles, including currently as Assistant Director of Enrollment Management and Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Engagement.
Mr. Boyd will move into his new position at Norfolk Academy in July. He succeeds Mr. Tommy Hudgins, who took on the role of Interim Middle School Director in 2019, continuing more than four decades of service in education.
Mr. Boyd is a proud independent school graduate, who attended Greenhill School (like Norfolk Academy, a member of INDEX, a selective consortium of the nation's premier independent schools) in Addison, Texas, from pre-kindergarten through his senior year. He had a decorated student career there, serving on the school’s honor council and distinguishing himself as a student, athlete, and leader. Mr. Boyd earned his A.B. at Brown University, an Ed.M. from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and is pursuing his doctorate in education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He joins us from Durham Academy in Durham, North Carolina, which is also a member of the INDEX school group. At Durham Academy, he has served in several key academic and administrative roles: as an English and history teacher, grade-level team leader, a basketball and soccer coach, as Assistant Director of Enrollment Management, and Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity, and Engagement. While at Durham Academy, Mr. Boyd designed and launched the Upper School Bridge Program, a year-long course for ninth graders that helps set them up for success in high school. He also partnered with colleagues across departments and divisions in the reimagination of service learning experiences, advisory curriculum, and cultural competency programming for Durham Academy students.
Before serving at Durham Academy, Mr. Boyd worked for several years at his alma mater, Greenhill School, where he taught Middle School English, coached football, basketball, and rugby, and served as Middle School Equity and Inclusion Coordinator. Mr. Boyd also brings college admissions experience with him, having worked in the undergraduate admissions office at Tufts University during his time in the Boston area.
Mr. Boyd met his wife Amanda while they were undergraduates at Brown. Dr. Amanda Boyd has her M.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts and is in a fellowship program in gastroenterology at Duke University Medical Center. The couple has a 3-year-old daughter.
Norfolk Academy eagerly awaits the opportunity to welcome the Boyd family this summer!
