Middle School Thanksgiving Drive Starts Season of Community Service

Holidays are a time to give back to the community, and Norfolk Academy will do just that throughout this season.

Middle School stepped up big in its weeklong donation drive leading up to Thanksgiving. Students collected more than 6,000 canned goods, so many that a pickup truck was not enough to hold everything. Teacher-Coach Dan Garbutt drove the truck and a hatch over to NA's community partners at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. The donations will help families in need.

On December 4, seniors will compete against faculty in the annual charity basketball game. The fun contest raised money for Toys for Tots, which allows children to receive holiday gifts.

On December 6, NA will host the D.A. Taylor Memorial Middle School Basketball Challenge. D.A. Taylor was a stellar scholar and athlete and a kind friend to everyone he met. Sadly, he passed away in 1995, at the age of 16, from meningococcal meningitis, but his legacy continues to live strong. The D.A. Taylor Charitable Foundation honors his spirit and and the good that he represented. It provides scholarships to students with the will to better themselves. Proceeds from this basketball tournament support the foundation. Admission is $5. Eighteen games will be played across three gyms.

And that is hardly all students will do. More fundraisers and service projects are planned across all divisions, including the annual Special Olympics Holiday Party.
