Dr. Megan McKittrick joins the Norfolk Academy family as an Upper School English teacher. She also will help students on the Yearbook and Literary Magazine.
McKittrick graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Fresno State in her native California, where she served as a tutor in the University Writing Center. She graduated with distinction with a Master of Arts in English at Old Dominion University and joined the Department of English as a full-time lecturer, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. During this time, she completed the Ph.D. in English from ODU. She then served as a technical writer and editor at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Why did you want to become a teacher?
As a shy child, I didn’t consider a teaching career until I ended up tutoring as an undergraduate in the University Writing Center. The opportunity to connect with students, to learn how they think, work, and write and to ultimately help them improve and achieve their goals lit a fire in me that I ended up following for the rest of my professional career.
What excites you about Norfolk Academy?
I’ve been a Norfolk Academy parent since 2022, and when I toured the campus during the application process, I felt an energy and enthusiasm from students, faculty, and staff that was truly unique and inspiring. When my child began attending, I was encouraged to find such engaged and attentive faculty. I knew I wanted to be a part of such a positive, lively community – to help foster the energy here and, selfishly, to enjoy it myself!
What's one fun fact about you students might find interesting?
I am an avid music appreciator, particularly contemporary indie music. I played several instruments coming through school but am more of an appreciator now. I consider it a hobby to build playlists around topics and moods. If students have any music recommendations, please share and help keep me up to date in the world of music!
