Melissa Carrillo joins the Norfolk Academy family as a Middle School Spanish Teacher. She also will serve as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs' softball program.
A Winston-Salem State University graduate, Carrillo moved in 2020 from California to Virginia to start her career as an educator. She has taught all levels of Spanish. She jumped right in at NA, leading a Hispanic Heritage Month panel for both the Middle and Upper School within her first few weeks of starting.
Why did you want to become a teacher?
I wanted to become a Spanish teacher because I am passionate about teaching Spanish through a Latin American lens. I love working with middle school students because of their high energy and their receptiveness.
What excites you about Norfolk Academy?
The thing that most excites me about NA is being part of such a warm and exemplary community. I am also excited to coach softball in the spring.
What's one fun fact about you students might find interesting?
I played softball in college, and I am very competitive. I love to implement sports, games, and competitions into my classroom. I am also passionate about food, and I like to make Mexican and Latin American dishes or foods in my classroom.
