Lyons Arts Performance Takes Students On Musical Journey

Students took a musical journey back in time on March 27 with a concert from Broadway stars, featuring love songs written by the immortal Gershwin brothers, George (music) and Ira (lyrics).

The dynamic duo wrote a string of Broadway hits in the 1920s and '30s, including Lady Be Good! and Porgy and Bess. Broadway director and Norfolk native Rob Fisher was on the piano, with vocalists Patti Murin and Ross Lekites, both of whom starred in Frozen on Broadway, singing classic tunes that were new to the ears of many students. Musicians on string bass, guitar, and vibraphone were also featured.

The concerts for Middle and Upper School students are the annual Joan and Tom Lyons performance through the school's partnership with the Virginia Arts Festival. Tom Lyons, who passed away in 2022, served as a Norfolk Academy trustee for 17 years, a member of the Board's Executive Committee, and chair of the Building and Grounds Committee during a time of major construction that transformed the campus.

Joan and Tom worked in partnership in their philanthropy and volunteerism, elevating Norfolk Academy and serving the causes of education and the arts throughout the region. Joan attended the concert with one of her sons, Tommy '07.
