Six Lower School students earned medals and Norfolk Academy took second place overall at this year's Robert S. Sergeant Independent School Forensics competition!
Robert S. Sergeant, a former Sixth Grade English Teacher, started Norfolk Academy's Lower School Forensics program more than 30 years ago. Academy participates with independent schools throughout the Hampton Roads area in the regional competition that he helped create, which allows students to highlight and strengthen their public speaking skills. This year's event was April 12 at Cape Henry Collegiate.
At Academy, the Lower School season starts with tryouts during the winter. Dozens of students join the team, practicing regularly with teacher-coaches. This year coaches were Lower School Counselor and Assistant Director Susan Duquette, who headed the team; Fourth Grade Teachers Kathy Lonergan and Janice Simone; Third Grade Teacher Sara Henry; Fifth Grade Teacher Shelly Stearney; Library Research Teacher Marianne Tembe; and Admissions Director Sarah Smythe.
Congratulations to the team, coaches, and all our individual winners!
