Dr. Valerie Thornton and her second grade girls led Lower School Chapel for this Black History Month, teaching about L & J Gardens, a historical neighborhood created by and for Black professionals during segregation, located across the street from Norfolk Academy.
Middle and Upper School learned about this community from Dr. Jesse Anderson '75, the first Black student to attend Norfolk Academy, who was raised there.
Dr. Thornton taught about additional prominent figures who grew up in L & J. Among them: Judge Robert Hagans; Dr. Edris Whitted Jones; and Coach Joseph Echols. Lower School will continue these lessons after Spring Break.
Dr. Thornton's students closed Chapel by leading renditions of educational songs “Rosa Sat" and “Lift Every Voice and Sing."
