Werkheiser

Congratulations to longtime teacher-coach Mary Werkheiser, who was inducted on Thursday night, January 15, into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, one of that sport's highest honors.

Werkheiser served at Norfolk Academy from 1989-2025, teaching Lower School physical education and coaching field hockey. Her teams won six VISAA state championships and she sent more than 60 student-athletes on to compete in college. She made a lasting impact on the sport statewide and nationally, dedicating more than 20 years of service to the VISAA State Field Hockey Committee and co-founding the TCOYO Field Hockey Club, an elite training pathway for countless athletes.

Werkheiser earned 14 TCIS Coach of the Year honors, and in 2005, she became the inaugural recipient of NA's Excellence in Coaching Award. In 2021, she was inducted into the Tidewater Field Hockey Ring of Honor.

Joining Werkheiser to celebrate at the induction ceremony in Florida were several members of the NA family, including former players and coaches.

“This sport has been such a huge part of my life—it’s where I’ve found purpose, joy, and lifelong friendships," Werkheiser said. "I can't tell you how much this means to me. It's overwhelming and I'm truly humbled."

Several Bulldogs joined longtime teacher-coach Mary Werkheiser for her induction into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame on January 15, 2026.
