Janice Simone

For its “Someone Special" team tribute, Girls Varsity Basketball saluted a teacher who energized them with “Girl Power" in 4th grade: Ms. Janice Simone.

“Your joyful and caring spirit is known by all, and we're better people because of it," said Sammi Jacobs '20. “We admire your resilience, and we are extremely grateful you are here tonight." Pink shirts were prompted by Ms. Simone's recent bout with cancer.

Ms. Simone, who is now back in the classroom after a brief absence for surgery, said that her cancer was caught in the early stages due to a routine, annual mammogram. She said she is taking every opportunity to spread the message about the importance of this diagnostic test. “Women, get your mammograms," she said emphatically.

At the annual “Someone Special" event, heartfelt personal tributes and thanks were given by each student-athlete to moms, dads, teachers, and coaches, some of whom were caught by surprise by the messages.
