One big and connected group of friends--that's how both valedictorians described the multi-talented Class of 2025. In her address, Olivia Reid reminded seniors of all of the little acts of kindness that built the foundation of the Class, like cheering at games and performances, giving a friend a hug after a tough game, and putting work aside to talk to if a friend is struggling.
When seniors disperse to college destinations, they will need to be intentional about keeping their bonds strong, she said. “I hope we will keep choosing to be the kind of people who hold the door open. Who check in. Who take the time to listen and who notice when a friend needs more than that. Who remember where we come from, and why it matters."
In his remarks, Leo Tang, humorously noted that he ran a “little data analysis" to figure out what made the Class of 2025 special: “I took every Instagram post from the Class of 2025, plugged it into a Python algorithm, and identified the words and phrases we used most. The most common word: Friend." He encouraged all of those friends to close their eyes, imagine a dream, goal, or ambition-- and then chase it: “Don't put your dreams in someone else’s hands. Don’t wait for instructions from a source of authority, politician, valedictorian or guru. Be your own guru. Hold onto that power."
In his closing remarks, Head of School Travis Larrabee told the newly minted graduates, “You are no longer just students. You are becoming stewards of how learning, questioning, and truth-seeking happen in the world. And the world needs such stewards—urgently." They are, he said, well-prepared for what is to come: “Class of 2025—you are ready. Ready to learn, to lead, and to inquire... Everyone here is proud of you. And we cannot wait to see the thoughtful, courageous questions you will carry into the world—and the lives you will lead as a result."
The Class of 2025 is ready to soar. Best of luck!
