Eight Norfolk Academy students earned honors in the 2024 Elie Wiesel Writing Competition, held by the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.
This competition annually receives entries from public and private schools throughout the Hampton Roads region and beyond. Students who enter are encouraged to explore moral courage, the dangers of prejudice, peer pressure, unthinking obedience to authority, and indifference. Elie Wiesel was a Jewish writer and Holocaust survivor who wrote more than 60 books.
Works from past winners have appeared in exhibits at the Chrysler Museum, Virginia Beach Central Library, and other prominent Hampton Roads art venues.
The competition is divided into two age groups, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (9-12) This year, Norfolk Academy placed four medalists in the junior essay competition.

- Eva Murphy '29: Special Commendation
In addition, four Upper School students earned honors in the senior division:

- Lucy Staub '25: 3rd place Senior Essay
- Noelle Chaing '24: Honorable Mention Senior Poetry
