Several dozen student-athletes learned on January 22 about the college recruiting process and what it is like to be a college athlete.

Norfolk Academy's College Counseling Office hosts this forum each year, for both student-athletes in grades 9-11 and their parents. College Counselor Steve Monninger, who coached at the collegiate level before becoming a teacher-coach at Norfolk Academy, helped lead the information session.

Coach Monninger explained the recruiting and admissions processes, detailing what steps student-athletes need to take during their journey. Both a football player and coach at Middlebury College, he also explained what life as a collegiate student-athlete is like.

This year's forum also offered perspectives, insights, and opinions from three guest collegiate coaches: Old Dominion University Football Assistant Head Coach Tony Lucas; William and Mary Women's Soccer Head Coach Julie Shackford; and Virginia Wesleyan University Field Hockey Head Coach Ryley van der Velde. They offered a broad range of thoughts, as ODU and William and Mary are Division I schools and VWU is a Division III school.

Each year, a number of Norfolk Academy student-athletes continue to play at the collegiate level. In 2023, 17 seniors committed to play at the next level, a number that will likely be greater in 2024.
