Norfolk Academy's varsity field hockey team capped a special season by winning the VISAA Division I state championship on November 9.
The Bulldogs defeated Bishop O'Connell High School 3-0 in a game in Richmond to earn the title. That closed a postseason that saw NA outscore opponents 43-3. The team earned the TCIS conference title with a 6-0 win against Catholic High School on November 1.
This is the second straight state title for the Bulldogs and their sixth since 2014.
Four Bulldogs made all-state first team: Mia Clarkson, Cooper Cutchins, Mia Jones, and Joji Purdy. Sydney Huddleston earned second-team all-state honors. Clarkson, Cutchins, and Purdy will all compete at Penn State University next year, while Huddleston will continue her playing career at American University.
The title capped a remarkable career for teacher-coach Mary Werkheiser, who is stepping down from coaching. Over three decades, Werkheiser's teams won 25 TCIS titles and six state championships. The Bulldogs won more than 450 matches under her guidance.
