Eleven Norfolk Academy seniors signed their commitments to play college athletics during a ceremony on November 12.
Across the nation, students traditionally are able to begin signing commitments for all Division I and II sports in mid-November. Schools hold ceremonies highlighting the athletic and academic accomplishments of these students.
This year's ceremony in Burroughs Gymnasium looked different, with necessary safety measures in place because of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance at Academy's event was limited to parents and a few immediate family members and coaches. However, NA-TV broadcast the event so anyone could watch live or after it concluded.
Director of Athletics Chad Byler opened the ceremony, thanking the student-athletes for all their efforts and accomplishments. “You have left a unique legacy here as a Bulldog, through your commitment, respect, toughness, and spirit," Mr. Byler said.
College Counselor Steve Monninger, who also is Director of Fitness, Strength, and Conditioning, and teaches health and physical education, then reminded the student-athletes of the work they'll need to put in at the next level.
“We know you will continue to make us proud," Mr. Monninger said.
Next, each student-athlete spoke, thanking their families, teacher-coaches, Academy's College Counseling team, and so many more people who have helped them along the way.
Headmaster Dennis Manning closed the ceremony, remarking on how quickly the journey from first through 12th grade has seemed, but how impressively the student-athletes have carried themselves. An example of how they've grown is the wide variety of outstanding colleges and universities they'll be attending.
“What a great and eclectic list of schools you will be launching out to next fall," Mr. Manning said.
Congratulations to all these student-athletes!
