all day
Community engagement is a focal point of a Norfolk Academy education, a point on display especially around the holidays.
That includes Holiday Break. On the day after students began their time off, many volunteered to return to campus to participate in a holiday party supporting Special Olympics. This annual event brings out the cheer for both Olympians and the students who donate their time.
That was hardly the only service project during holiday season. Among the others:
- Seniors played teachers in the annual charity basketball game, which in 2024 supported Toys for Tots.
- Upper School collected totes to ForKids full of items for teenagers in need.
- Middle School benefitted Point O’ View Elementary School and CHKD Mental Health Hospital, collecting gently used clothes and stocking stuffers, respectively.
- Lower School raised money to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Students learned during a December Chapel that the money will benefit a Mobile Market, a truck that will provide food in locations that need it most. Middle School is working to launch the truck in the summer.
- Upper and Middle School students collaborated to bring therapy dogs to campus right before final exams, a popular stress relief.
- The D.A. Taylor Memorial Middle School Basketball Challenge in early December raised money for the D.A. Taylor Charitable Foundation, which provides scholarships to students around Virginia.
And this is just a snippet. More in store in 2025!
