Breakthrough at Norfolk Academy closed its 33rd year with a successful graduation ceremony on July 25, filled with celebrations and recognition of the many accomplishments that took place during the program.

Breakthrough is a free summer program that prepares public middle school students for high school while giving college students interested in teaching hands-on experience. NA Teacher-Coach Reggie Cole directs the program with assistance from fellow NA faculty Jordon Crichlow and Ashlyn Kemp. Breakthrough teachers come from around the country, but include devoted NA alumni, seniors, and faculty. At Graduation, Sophie Knittig '23 received special recognition for completing her third year of teaching. Other Bulldogs who served in 2025: Eric Acra '84; Tom Duquette; Elizabeth Glassman; Kyle Goodson; Adi Thapa '26; and Valerie Thornton.

After thanking the teachers for their service, Head of School Travis Larrabee spoke to the students. He called on them to continue to ask good questions and be curious. And he credited them for working hard and growing throughout the five-week program. “By choosing to be here this summer you decided to challenge yourself. Be proud of that."

Cole described himself as a servant leader and thanked the teachers for being the same. “This program functions because of some inspiring young people," he said. “You are a special, special group."

Cole also applauded the 55 students - including 18 graduates completing their third summer of classes - who were unafraid to challenge themselves (right up through the comedy-filled talent show that closed the year). “Take your enthusiasm and go do good work," he said.
