At the Athletics Kickoff Dinner on September 3, Head of School Travis Larrabee and Director of Athletics Chad Byler both credited teacher-coaches for the success Norfolk Academy's program has enjoyed - an average of 15 TCIS titles the past three years; more than 70 graduates playing in college; 37 three-sport athletes last year; and most importantly, growth of character.

“Lessons learned in the classroom are reinforced on the field and lessons forged in competition, like teamwork, resilience, strategy, and patience return with our students to their studies and to their lives," Larrabee said.

Byler noted that NA had more than 70 teacher-coaches last year and they gave about 200-300 hours of their time each season. Many student-athletes want to play multiple sports because they see that dedication, he added.

Another point of emphasis at the orientation was that, while victories and trophies are great, the goal of the NA athletics program is to help students grow and mature.

“Our legacy is going to be measured in the character that we build and the respect that we teach and the kind of young men and women that our athletes will become long after they graduate from here," Byler said.

Also noted were some recent upgrades to athletic facilities. Burroughs Gymnasium, where orientation was held, was renovated over the summer, with brighter lighting and a new court. Stands that overlook the Lindsay Soccer Complex and field hockey's Werkheiser Field will be complete this fall.
