Norfolk Academy celebrated a stellar 2025-26 athletics year on May 11, recognizing the many accomplishments of teams, student-athletes, and teacher-coaches. Among the highlights:

🏆 14 three-year three-sport athletes
🏆 14 TCIS championships
🏆 12 seniors committed to play in college
🏆 10 TCIS Coach of the Year winners
🏆 4 individual state champions (and growing this week)

But NA athletics is about more than victories and trophies. Said Director of Athletics Chad Byler: "At Norfolk Academy athletics is more than wins and losses, it's about who you are and how you treat people around you. It's about showing up every day with heart, being a great teammate, giving your best effort, and carrying yourself with toughness, commitment, respect, and spirit."

Maryellen Violette '26, a captain for the varsity field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams, told younger athletes in the audience to soak every every lesson from teacher-coaches, because they helped her grow as a person. "Norfolk Academy will forever be the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and a huge portion of this is because of the athletic culture and teams here."

Keese Shamblee '26, a captain for cross country, indoor track, and rowing, agreed that NA athletics has shaped him. "It has given me confidence and friendships. It has taught me how to lead. It has given me hardships and success and memories that will last a lifetime."

A handful of individual awards also were handed out:

TCIS scholar-athlete awards (given to student-athletes who played multiple sports and held the highest grade point averages): David Martin '26, Adaline Scott '26

Excellence in Coaching Award (given to an individual who, through love of athletic competition and commitment to the overall development of Norfolk Academy student-athletes, serves as a role model for both athletes and coaches alike and advances the mission of the school through strength of character and integrity): Paul Carrezola, Director of Athletic Performance and a Middle School physical education teacher
