Athletic Director Aubrey Shinofield has been selected as Independent Schools Athletic Administrator of the Year by the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (VIAAA).
Shinofield, who has served as the school’s athletic director for seven years, has guided the school’s athletic program of 75 distinct teams through years of growth and tremendous competitive success. In recent years, the school has won state championships in field hockey, girls tennis, boys swimming and diving, track and field events, cross country, and men's crew (lightweight four). Teams have also won numerous Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) championships. Shinofield has continued to coach along with her administrative duties, serving as coach of women's varsity crew.
In addition, Shinofield serves as president of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS). In that role, she has led the conference through some recent challenges and a strategic planning process, thereby helping the conference emerge as a stronger and more cohesive organization.
Before coming to Norfolk Academy, Shinofield served as director of athletics and physical education at Hollins University. She has also held administrative positions in student affairs and campus recreation at Washington and Lee University. She had a distinguished collegiate coaching career in women’s rowing at Princeton, Harvard, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Minnesota. She holds a bachelor’s degree in American history from Princeton, where she was a national champion rower and captain of the women’s crew team. She earned All-Ivy League honors and was Sportswoman of the Year in her senior year. She also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan.
Shinofield will be recognized at the VIAAA awards ceremony in April. Congratulations, Coach Shinofield!
