Hucles

Angela Hucles Mangano '96, two-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Women’s National Soccer champion, will be the keynote speaker for a virtual celebration for Virginia students graduating in the Class of 2020.

The ceremony, Virginia Graduates Together, is a first-ever event, organized in response to the pandemic, which has cancelled graduations at high schools and colleges across the Commonwealth. It will include congratulations and encouraging words from Hucles, Gov. Ralph Northam, and an array of notable Virginians. Musical performances are also planned.

Ms. Hucles Mangano attended the University of Virginia after graduating from Norfolk Academy. She went on to become an Olympic gold medalist for the U.S. Women's Soccer Team and enjoyed a professional soccer career. She has since developed a successful business career as an entrepreneur, and is known as a an advocate for gender diversity, equity, and inclusion. A few weeks ago, she met with our girls varsity soccer team for a conversation on Zoom about her journey in sports, including challenges that she overcame along the way.

Virginia Graduates Together is scheduled to air at 5 p.m. today, May 29, on various media outlets across the state, including WHRO-TV. It also is scheduled to stream on Facebook Live and YouTube

Students are invited to post photos or videos to social media, highlighting how they plan to celebrate graduation, their hopes and dreams, and what the Class of 2020 taught them. They should include the hashtag #GraduateTogetherVA.
