The Virginian-Pilot recently highlighted Bay McLaughlin '02, who, along with brothers Bruce and Craig, founded First Landing Seafood Company in Virginia Beach.
The Pilot article notes that the brothers grew up on the shores of the Lynnhaven River and are now working the water daily, growing and harvesting Lynnhaven oysters. They're also working with groups like Lynnhaven River Now and The Chesapeake Bay Foundation to ensure the bivalve’s future. They started selling their first oysters late last year.
In June, the company launched Lynnhaven Fancies, noted as America’s first oyster. They are available in restaurants around the region, as well as the Saturday morning Shore Drive Farmers Market, and on Friday afternoons at Browning’s Marine. (They'll also be available at the NA Homecoming and Class Reunion party October 22!)
Brothers Will '23 and Fred '23 interned with the company this summer. They got a well-rounded education, learning about everything from sorting and harvesting oysters to sales.
