Angela Hucles Mangano '96, a standout student-athlete at Norfolk Academy who went on to become an Olympic star, returned home on February 18 as a speaker for the Norfolk Forum series at Chrysler Hall.
Hucles Mangano netted 204 goals at NA, easily the top scorer (boys or girls) in the school's storied soccer history. She was the Virginian-Pilot Female High School Athlete of the Year in 1996, her senior year. Beyond that, she was a multi-sport athlete and Senior Class President. She went on to success at UVA, where she studied anthropology and earned first-team All-ACC soccer honors four times.
She became a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist for U.S. Soccer, and a two-time World Cup Bronze Medalist. She was the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s 2009 Humanitarian of the Year. After her professional playing career she stayed in the sports world, serving as President of the Women’s Sports Foundation and a television analyst for ESPN, Fox and NBC, among numerous other entrepreneurial endeavors.
Late in 2024, she became President of Women’s Soccer for the Houston Dash, moving from a position as General Manager of Los Angeles’ women’s professional soccer team, Angel City FC.
With decades of success in both athletics and business, Hucles Mangano has become an inspirational speaker on the topic of leadership. Her Norfolk Forum address shared her journey from youth fields in Hampton Roads to top levels of international and professional competition.
She also thanked everyone who helped on her rise, as she said in an interview with The Virginian-Pilot before the speech.
“Those lessons, those attributes, the experiences I had through the teachers and the coaches in the Hampton Roads area at Norfolk Academy, Beach FC,” Hucles Mangano said, “all of those people contributed massively to who I am as a person and not just who I was as a soccer player. … I want to say thank you, thank you to the community for supporting me.”
